Art Terms - Definitions

The terms and definitions discussed in this section are intended to enhance your understanding of a few basic art styles, materials and techniques. I hope these definitions will give you a better appreciation of the various art techniques used in creating the works on this and other art web sites you may visit in the future.

traditional printmaking - prints made with traditional printmaking materials and manual press equipment. In it's purest form, the image is typically created directly on the printing surface without the aid of existing artwork, photography or digital equipment. traditional printmaking involves quite a bit of physical labor. In addition, traditional printing plate surfaces undergo extreme pressure necessary to achieve high quality impressions as they are hand-pulled through a manual press. Under these conditions surface wear occurs rapidly and only a few quality prints can be produced. Etching and Stone lithography are two of the most highly regarded original printmaking techniques.

stone lithograph - A handmade print created on a limestone slab. The image is initially hand drawn onto a finely grained limestone using special greasy pencils and crayons. The final image is completed over a series of complex steps applying water, oil-based inks, gum solutions and acid solutions to the printing surface. Lime stones have a distinct fine grain that render a wide tonal value and detail in printed impressions.

etching - An etching is created on a metal plate by "scratching" through a waxy coated surface material on the plate. The plate is placed in an acid bath and the acid eats into the exposed areas creating grooves in the plate. The plate can then be inked and prepared to pull an impression. A soft (damp) sheet of paper is pressed down into the inked grooves on the plate as it runs through the a hand-press.

limited edition - Original prints made available only in limited numbers. Traditional printing plate surfaces undergo extreme pressure necessary to achieve high quality impressions as they are hand-pulled through a manual press. The rapid surface wear places limits on the number of quality prints that can be produced. The prints are typically signed and numbered in sequence as they are pulled from the press by the artist or Master Printmaker. Art reproductions (machine made prints) can also be made available in limited edition.

art reproductions( art posters) - A reproduction of an existing artwork created with the use of photography, computers, digital scanners and/or commercial offset printing equipment. Art reproductions are sometimes numbered and signed by the artist and marketed as limited edition prints. Reproductions are not the same as original prints (handmade prints) but are often confused as such.
